Applying Algorithms to EHR Data Can Detect Diabetes, Study Finds – iHealthBeat
Diabetes is a disease that runs in my family, and my father is currently not diabetic, but that is only because he takes preventative measures to ensure that his current health does not deteriorate into full blown Diabetes. Algorithms and their applications in studies such as these will truly advance health care in a way that could impact millions of people, and avoid future medical costs for people such as myself who have a family history with certain diseases.
There is not much too this article, but the information contained within really says a lot. The algorithm was able to identify over 40,000 potential cases of Diabetes based on lab results and other diagnostic tests and currently prescribed medications. I would be overjoyed to learn that I was one of the people identified in this study, not because of the potential health complications, but because of the opportunity to take steps to correct it before it is too late.

ONC, CMS make Stage 2 revisions | Healthcare IT News
I always like to post any changes to meaningful use rules. We have now just entered the 60 day period where comments are accepted on these edited measures, which concern quality measures and the availability of patient information to the patients themselves.
DTS always pays extremely close attention to these rule changes so we can keep our clients on the right track. If you or your providers have any issues with these revised measures, I would strongly suggest submitting a comment. Information on comment submission can be found on CMS’s website: www.cms.hhs.gov.

Can electronic health records save your world? | Test & Measurement World
Taking medical professionals and all the business factors out of the whole EHR debate, this article really has a good point at the end. Ransom Stevens paints a picture where a patient comes in with an illness, and the illness is treated based on a massive database where said patient is compared to all other patients with similar genetics and symptoms. This approach, in a perfect world, will eliminate old treatment methods which rely on clinical case studies success rates that are not 100%. In the new approach, when we are all linked up and all of our data is readily available for use in cross-referenced treatments, it could drastically improve treatments for rare conditions where not a lot of local data may be readily available.
As someone who has a rare condition, I am extremely excited about the future of medicine, especially if all of these things happen. The ability to be compared to all other people who share my condition, and their successes and failures in treatment would make my day to day live drastically better. As Stevens state, some people may see this as government intruding on our health records, but for someone like me, I would offer my personal record to any doctor in the world, if I thought I had a chance of getting rid of the daily symptoms I face as a result of my condition.
I am excited about the future of medicine, which is why I work in the Health Care IT industry, for a company that can help with this process.
